The Vermont Equine Welfare Coalition was formed to help people needing assistance to provide for their equines, and to save as many equines as possible through direct assistance, foster care, emergency assistance, and public education. The group is composed of individuals representing rescue organizations, breed groups, veterinarians, state officials, law enforcement agencies, and concerned citizens. Though diverse in perspectives and background, we all shed our differences and unite to solve the problems confronting the equine community in our state.
In addition to our established Hay Bank, one of the first areas of development for the VEWC will be to keep a current list of responsible equine rescues in the state to be used as a guide for the public when choosing a rescue to adopt from, surrender a horse to, or to financially support. In addition, we are developing a list of qualified foster homes across the state who can assist horses in a time of need or crisis.
The mission of the Hay Bank is to provide established horse rescue organizations, sanctuaries, law enforcement agencies, and horse owners facing financial hardship with temporary hay and feed assistance; and further, to assist such entities and individuals in planning for the future.
Our resources are limited and we review applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. In order to help as many people and horses as we can, we have developed a process to ensure a positive outcome for all involved. The process is described in the VEWC Brochure, Helping People/Saving Horses.
